Political Action

Electoral Involvement / OSCRC PAC

The Oregon State Council for Retired Citizens Political Action Committee serves two purposes. The first is to survey and endorse candidates based on their positions on issues affecting seniors and people with disabilities. The second is to educate both the public and candidates about the key issues facing seniors and people with disabilities.

Candidate endorsements are provided to those candidates and incumbent legislators on a state and national level who show support for the major issues that are impacting the senior population. Among the issues that are of concern: community-based senior/disability long term care; the state Long Term Care Ombudsman Program; Medicare/Medicaid; consumer protections within managed health care; freedom of access to prescription drugs; senior dental and denture care; development of new low-income housing; and increased senior and disability transportation programs.

Although no donations are available, the PAC provides campaign assistance in a number of other ways, including assistance in developing senior-related campaign materials and letters. Endorsed candidates are also allowed to use the PAC name or a quote in their literature.

This PAC effort gives support to our political friends of seniors and open up opportunities for working together and having a positive impact on the next legislative process.

The OSCRC PAC also spearhead election educational projects to help Oregon seniors become better informed about the candidates and issues they will see in the elections and how to effectively participate in the election process as well as educate candidates about issues affecting seniors and people with disabilities.

The OSCRC PAC have sponsored voter education and mobilization efforts called Seniors Count, including: voter registration of seniors and their caregivers and families; distributing candidate questionnaires to document their perspective on senior and disability issues; creating an online and printed NCRC/SC Voter’s Guide to be distributed in the senior and disability community statewide to educate them on candidate positions; hosting candidate forums in key locations around the state to give voters the chance to hear candidates address their concerns; creating television and radio public service ads to get the senior vote out; and coordinating ballot collection efforts in senior communities across the state.
